In this month’s Great Lakes Watermark issue, paddler Katherine O’Reilly and Lake Ontario waterkeeper John Kennedy discuss their passion for exploring freshwater seas. Additionally, they shared poetry inspired by their experiences kayaking – an excellent example of what we hope to find in this issue: inspiration.

1. Listen

If you’re searching for inspiration, the water can be a great place to begin. Sometimes it’s where magic happens – whether through poetry or simply being in the right place at the right time. There are several ways to find your inspiration on the water, but the most effective method is letting it flow naturally.

Water can be an enchanting force that can transport both mind and body to places they might not normally be able to explore. Whether kayaking through the desert or enjoying a tropical lake, there’s something special for everyone to explore and savor.

On the water, there’s plenty to see and do, but one thing that often goes overlooked is dehydration. To stay hydrated during your time on the water, simply drink plenty of water; alternatively, you could try a sports drink as long as you don’t overdo it! The most effective way to prevent dehydration is planning ahead: bring along a water bottle and keep it with you at all times.

2. Look

In today’s fast-paced world, it can be challenging to carve out time for relaxing and appreciating life’s simpler pleasures. Sometimes all you need is some motivation to get through the day – finding inspiration on the water is an excellent way to bring yourself back in the present moment and remind yourself that everything will work out in the end.
