Tim Taylor's Journal Entries Made During his Record Breaking Kayak Tour of New Zealand

On Wednesday the 29th February 2012 Tim Taylor finished a 15 month, 5,529km trip around New Zealand in his kayak. Completing this adventure made him only the second person ever to achieve the feat. He is also the youngest person to have done it and he did in record time. This is the online blog he maintained during his epic journey.

You can take a look at some of the photos from his trip here.

An Update from Opunake

Hey all, just while I’m sitting around waiting out some bad weather I thought I’d get through an update for you.

Day 145 - Wednesday 20.04.11

Stuck in the South Taranaki Bight !!!

For the past week, the weather has been pretty awful, and the coast from here to New Plymouth is not very kayak friendly......rocks, cliffs and very few places to come ashore safely. Consequently, Tim has been seeing a lot more of Patea than he had planned.

The weather tomorrow looks promising and Tim hopes to make the 33km distance to Ohawe with time enough to spare for the extra 34km to Opunake. Shorter daylight hours aren't helping, so the weather will have to be really good for him to make the whole 67km. Also, with virtually no stopping places inbetween, it will be all or nothing.

An Update from Himitangi

Hey everyone, I’ve found me a computer once again so thought I’d get down another update while I had the chance.

Day 130 - Tuesday 05.04.11

A quick update from Tauranga head office....Tim has now virtually completed the South Island, and depending on weather, hopes to cross to the North Island tomorrow.

Tim left D'Urville Island this morning in pretty average weather. He had planned to take the safer route round the top, but some local advice persuaded him to take the shorter but riskier trip through French Pass. All went well, and improving weather enabled him to push on to Titirangi Bay. As at this afternoon, he has paddled a total of 3,805 km, with 76 days on the water and 54 days stuck onshore, and an average of 50 km per paddling day.

A Nelson Update
